Technically this vineyard sits in the Russian River appellation, but it behaves much more like a true coastal site. The vineyard resides near the Northern entrance of the Petaluma Gap, and as such gets pummeled by afternoon wind as it snakes its way north through the Russian River. The block we source our grapes from is at the top of one of the highest points on the property, facing north east and planted to Clone 548. It is decidedly California cool climate, and the skins grow thick, protecting themselves from Mother Nature’s whimsical and unabashed tendencies. The vines should struggle here, and although it’s a relatively young vineyard, it’s already showing incredible elegance and complexity.
The 2021 is at first a bit shy on the nose, betraying subtle hints of lemon lime, brioche, cinema popcorn, and green apple. The colder climate naturally retains the wine’s elegance, which shines through in the body and mouthfeel. Citrus notes push through the mid palate, and gives way to a bright and zippy finish, with honey, rich acidity, and oak in no short supply.
