Ewald Vineyard sits on three acres of sandy Goldridge soils in the Laguna Ridge sub-appellation of Russian River Valley, and is split about evenly between Dijon clones 777 and 115. The site borders a meandering hillside, which combined with the soil structure creates super small yields. We immediately wanted to get fruit from this site when we visited it, not only because of its ideal terroir, but also because of a feeling we had walking through the vines. The way the wind whipped through the contours of the up and down elevation changes, the deeply sandy soils making it slightly more difficult to take a step, the tiny delicate fruit clusters hanging from the canes…we can’t exactly put our finger on it, but it was a bit of a magical experience for us. Somehow we knew that this particular site could produce beautiful wine.
Aromatics of fresh cherry, damp soil, and strawberry cola are all present. The palate is thicker, and the weight of the wine across the tongue is warm and pleasant. Oak and spice find themselves grazing together in the mid-palate, with fruit notes of strawberry pie and cherry. The finish maintains a sweet fruit profile, with complimenting flavors of oak and subtle acidity.
