The Hilliard Bruce vineyard sits atop a hillside on the Western edge of the St. Rita Hills AVA, so it is more directly affected by the cooling influences of the ocean.  The vineyard is SIP certified, which incorporates a variety of environmentally favorable practices.  There is a solar array used to power over 80% the energy used on the property, an intricate bioreclamtion reservoir for rejuvenation of grey water, target irrigation techniques to greatly reduce water used on site, and self-produced compost spread throughout the vineyard made of green clippings and the droppings from the many Arabian horses that call that property their home. Well cared for by their owners, the conditions of the terroir only really allow the vines to carry maybe 1.5-2 tons per acre of fruit, creating a natural tension between the vine and its outside influencers, ultimately producing strong, healthy, and resilient vines full of character and natural balance.

The nose starts a little shy, teasing an array of restrained red fruit notes and a bit of earthy funkiness.  As the wine opens up, rose petal and floral notes push forward, along with slightly darker fruit.  One of the reasons we chose this particular vineyard is due to the tannin profile of the resulting wines.  The body carries no sharp edges, and skates smoothly across the palate.  The finish carries nice balance, with oak characteristics taking a more prominent position in this part of the sensory experience.  If possible, we recommend decanting 30 minutes prior to enjoying.
