One of our most coastal influenced wines, Sexton Vineyard is farmed by legendary vineyard manager Jim Pratt. We are lucky to be able to get a tiny amount of fruit out of here, and it ALWAYS makes great wine. Winegrape clone 828 grows shoots straight up, and the canopy is typically quite robust, which is necessary to ripen even the little amount of fruit hanging in this cold, foggy part of Sonoma County. Clone 9 lends a lighter body style with expressive aromatics. Goldridge soils are prevalent throughout the vineyard, which means that the earth under the vine is starved for both nutrients and water. This forces the vines to struggle, and inside that struggle, we find the creation of fruit that is exquisitely balanced and poised.
The 2018 is an absolutely beautiful expression of this incredible vineyard in the Sebastopol Hills. Aromatically we notice sandalwood, pomegranate, bright cherry, rose petal, and hints of pennyroyal tea leaf. The palate shows energetic strawberry fruit flavors and Umami texture, reminiscent of grilled Portobello Mushrooms. This combination adds flavor and complexity to this wine’s historically brighter fruit notes. The finish is lively but drenches the tongue, and playful notes of strawberry and raspberry verify a pleasant, fruit-centric finish.
